Past SLC Local Band

I've recently gone back to some of my older SLC local music to re-listen to some of the bands I liked so much back in the day. There's one particular band I liked but was never able to find any recordings for--Nauvoo. They were kind of a heavy dark 4AD-sounding band as I remember them. Of course I never got to hear much from them, but always wanted to hear more.

Does anyone remember this band? They would have been around in about 1989-90.

How about other bands from this same time period? I've transferred a number of my old 7" albums and tapes to mp3 for easy access, and I'd be happy to share them with anyone that could do the same for me.

Hi,

As someone who sings and writes poetry (among other things) I was intrigued with this particular group. And I'm curious; what is the music scene like these days in SLC? I've sung with entertainment groups back in the eighties and nineties. I most recently sang four-part-harmony with a womens chorus which is a whole different kind of thing. It was fun though. Anyway, I would welcome any feedback.

Thanks,

Bren

Our Time In Space
http://myspace.com/ourtimeinspace

Our Time In Space stem from a less epic branch of the prog-rock family tree. This Is … is five tracks of cosmic math jams appealing to the inner geek in all of us. While some of the chord structures are a bit tired (i.e. the simple hook on “Suenos Malos”), extended segues into layered echo-effect are downright hypnotic. Angular guitars and soothing falsetto help mix things up, peppering shoe-gazer melodies that might otherwise drag down an EP well worth your while. (City Weekly Review)

From their own biography on www.kannal.org...

Primal rhythm, swirling dancers, ancient instruments and futuristic technologies blend with mythic archetypes and alternative rock to create a musical, visual, sensual experience. Kan’Nal’s “Shamanic Rock,” documented on their Sony Red debut, Dreamwalker, conveys the power of these spectacles.

For years, songwriter/vocalist Tzol was drawn to explore Mexico and Central America. On one particular journey in early 2001, Tzol met guitarist Tierro in the village of San Marcos on the magical lake Atitlan. Writing songs and performing together in Guatemala inspired them to capture their vision on an album.

After recording the first Kan’Nal CD in Tierro’s hometown Toronto, the two returned to lake Atitlan the following year. At their very first show, they were joined by songwriter/bassist Rodolfo Escobar and performance artist Teresita Hinojosa. With this addition Kan’Nal gained a new visual and mystical dimension. Living together near the lake, all four drew inspiration from the beauties and hardships that surrounded them.

One by one the group encountered the others destined to join their tribe. Aaron Jerad, another traveler on “La Ruta Maya,” came into the picture while they were visiting the Yucatan peninsula. His foundational percussion and solid didgeridoo playing added further elements of trance and rhythm Leaving Mexico they added Gilly Gonzalez, whose ferocious drumming had made him a figure of legend in Texas. Completing the circle, artist and dancer Akayate joined the band in Colorado. Her gift for costume design and movement enhanced the band’s visual and storytelling elements.

The music... the dances… the story-songs proclaim “tear down the borders…unite the colors… bring down the fire and walk as one” (“Gypsy”) and demand “shake my bones ‘til they shatter/shake my soul like a rattle” (“Desert Flower”) These are the cries that have flown over the Nevada desert at Burning Man, sounded from the Rockies at Dreamtime in Colorado, and echoed through the Earthdance Festival in California, drawing thousands of listeners to join Kan’Nal on their journey.

One people, one color, one earth.

Kashmir is Hosting Tempest and the Durga Tour on September 16th. ..

Kashmir is Hosting Tempest and the Durga Tour

We are planning a 3-hour workshop, and will start with Dancing Darkly - and will touch on, or include aspects of Dramatic body language.
Workshop will be held at the Utah Arts Alliance - 2191 South 300 West. Check in time will be announced.

Gothla performance the evening of Saturday, September 16, 2006. We are looking at 2 possibilities - and will announce the details as they become final. I am leaning toward having the event at a restaurant so I can actually sit and enjoy myself for a change. So we will probably sell advance tickets which would include your dinner. Performers and spectators alike will need a ticket.

My vision for the Gothla is "professionally informal", if that makes any sense. Meaning the line up will be set - but in not as formal a setting as a theater!
There are still a few performance slots available - so message or email me if you are interested.
Please be aware that the Gothla isn't a Halloween campy type show, but a themed event, and if you have any questions as to if your piece is appropriate for this event, perhaps we could make arrangements for you to show me/us the piece!

NOTE:* Please be aware that I am asking ALL performers to support the workshop - we are keeping costs really low - but can only do so if we have your support of the workshopas well as your participation in the Gothla!

More details to follow - thanks so much!
Saturday, July 1 and Sunday July 2, 2006 .

Kami Liddle is a solo dance artist born with a passion for movement. She began taking ballet and tap lessons at the age of four and performed in numerous dance recitals as a young girl. At the age of eleven, Kami auditioned for a part as a hip hop and jazz dancer for a youth performing troupe in Victorville , California and performed with the group for several years before moving to Nevada . Kami's first belly dance instructor was a wonderful woman named Tahari. She was a gorgeous hula dancer and taught an ethno-cabaret fusion of belly dance. In addition to studying with Tahari, Kami took an interest in American Tribal Style and studied Fat Chance Belly Dance religiously.

Kami's style is what she calls a modern fusion of an ancient dance. Although she is primarily a tribal dancer, she pulls from the various styles of belly dance that she has studied, as well as modern, hip hop, jazz, and bhangra dance. Her goal is to always be a student of dance and to constantly expand her repertoire. In addition to performing as a soloist, she collaborates and performs with other dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo, directed by Rachel Brice. Kami has worked collaboratively with Samantha Riggs of Boom Boom Bollywood on choreography and periodically performs with the company.
*

WORKSHOP DETAILS:
Workshop 1: Tribal Fusion for Solo Dances. American Tribal Style was created for a group of dancers. When a solo dancer performs ATS the movements are often flat and repetitive on their own. In this workshop we are going to take the movements from the traditional American Tribal Style vocabulary and mix it up. We will work on adding a little creativity and your own style to create interesting Tribal Fusion solos. With overlaying isolations, level changes and a few new moves thrown in, we'll learn a few combos that any solo dancer can use. A vocabulary of the basic Fat Chance and Gypsy Caravan movements will be helpful.

Workshop 2: Locks, Breaks & Waves. Locks, Breaks and Waves are a modern approach to adding complexity to basic movements. The workshops will begin with a brief warm-up and drills focusing on the technique aspect of executing Locks, Breaks and Waves. We will continue by combining and overlaying these movements, creating short combinations with cues that can be used in any dance routine.

the weather is getting warmer which means more music outside and increased consumption of frosty beverages. Any lines on good live music in the coming months? Summer gigs? Festivals you want to share? I am moving far far away from SLC come August and will be doing as much soaking it in as possible.

Please share upcoming shows or your favorite place to see live music or your favorite little hole in the wall place to have a couple of frosty ones on a sultry slc summer eve whether is good local music or just a great jukebox.

I really enjoyed some of the shows at gallivan last summer, (minus the overpriced beers) there was some great talent in town last year.

Kan’Nal a musically driven, theatrical event, leaves audiences spellbound.

One of the best live shows that I've seen in a while. These guys are not to be missed and will be making their first SLC show. They've played at Burning-man, the Om Festival, and many other festival.

"ORANGE" by Melissa Warner

An incredible local singer/songwriter gets good review in Trib on 11/9. If you haven't heard this CD, it is definitely worth purchasing. (Ok, it is also a shameless plug, for a friend.)

"ORANGE" by Melissa Warner
Grade: B+

Melissa Warner remains in a select company of Salt Lake City-based musicians who continue to expand the boundaries of their art without sacrificing their roots. In the case of "Orange," Warner, a pop-based folkie, has successfully framed her introspections within the borders of a full-blown band. While the warm-voiced Warner would never be confused for a rocker, songs such as "Still Be Around," "Brown Eyes" and "Around Once" gently hum along. She also does a cool rendition of Mike Ness' "Ball and Chain." With "Orange" Warner continues to happily raise the bar on her own ability.
-am willing to pay you handsomly for your time, DOE
-am good company, an eager student, won't bore you or waste your time
-don't have time to waste with someone who wants to hang out and drink coffee
- prefer you have at least some of your own materials, books, etc that we can work from

just think... you could earn some extra cash for xmas or hanukah or better/more plentiful drugs or an extra tofu turkey.

so I was soaking in the tub last night and read through the city weekly SLAMMY awards. my first question is why is there not a category for writers? I don't get it. you have incredibly detailed coverage of the music scene, theater, even the stinkin' teli, but nowhere does the poet, the prose writer nor the spoken word performer get an inch of pulp for props. I am incensed. I am sick with contempt. ahem. ok. so...

what did *you* think of the slammys?

In ogden. last show I saw there was John Lee Hooker, Jr. It was fucking incredible. what a story teller, and I wasn't sure if he would do one of daddy's songs or not, then he did and I swear to god he levitated.

they have a good blues night on tuesdays, national acts, usually worth the drive. don't mind the big hairs and the hairy chests from Brewski's next door. most of them don't bite.
