If you are talking local musicians, it has been a while since I was a devoted follower of any local band. I would go see every show the BoxCar Kids, Potato Heads, or Swee Rhino ever did. I am rather fond of SLAJO (Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra). They are playing at Ego's tonight and definitely worth a look. I also like what I hear of PurdyMouth, although I have yet to see them live.
  • Local Bands??? Probably my fav. would have to be Form of Rocket.

    Wolf
    Red Bennies
    Le Force
    • i have heard the other three in your list and read about form of rocket...the thing I like the very most in that list is Le Force, I am not into that music at all, but those guys just don't give a shit...they are already rock stars...I wish I could cultivate that kind of Moxie.

I forgot to list Magstatic. I know some people don't like Terrance, but I pretty much like any project he is involved. They are also a good live show, they just don't play that often.

I'm kinda on the old side to, and don't actually live in SL anymore though I try to see what's going on there whenever I visit (a few times a year.)

I really loved Mouthbreather a lot when they were around. The Decomposers. Some from Plato's list. (Trailer park I used to always go & see.)

Who is good in SL these days? Anyone?
      • Unsu...

...never saw Mouthbreather (and wish I had) but HOW could I forget the Decomposers?! Chopper (singer for Decomposers)is still around and has a band but though I see him out and about, I haven't seen his new band, but I would recommend it just cause he is involved, He really tried hard to give a show, and I like the lyrics he writes about the stupid, ugly, and icky side of life....
  • Local SLC Bands tend to be a bit too pasty for me... But there is one that is worth the time and money... Quadraphonic is quite good and always good for a few laughs... Mind you for those punkrockophiles I suggest you avoid them as they do have talent and that would be very unpunkrockish..
    • Unsu...

I can't remember if I ever saw the Decomposers after Chopper started singing for them, but I probably did. They had this other singer before who totally rawked but he left the band cuz I think the Mormons got him...

I remember a comment made in SLUG that was prolly the only funny thing I ever read in there--twas right after Kurt Cobain went kaboom--someone (pretty sure it was Jon Schumann's column but he had a woman's pseudonymn...Helen something? Can't remember) was speculating that Nirvana was going to come back as "Chopper and Nirvana." Ha ha. That always cracked me up.

      I'm easy to amuse.

BTW, "Chicken Dinner," if that is your real name, plenty of punk rock bands have talent. I just prefer the ones that didn't.

      Chicken:
      Piss off.
I ( and I alone) will decide what is "unpunkrockish" (to me- never again to presume that YOU can tell me what I like- or don't/won't...Just tell me what you DO like ...thanks assboy...) I don't have to answer to you for anything. but I want you to know that though I hate suposedly "musically articulate" acts as ELO and Emerson Lake and Palmer- I love Queen and and Led Zeppelin, who , If not "punkrockish" per se, were at least "Fucking Cool" Kiss my (black) white ass...so to speak...
      • now, now boys (if that is what you are, I enjoy being presumptuous), let's not fling accusations about like so much shite. I don't recall anyone telling anyone what they have to like. this is a sharing tribe and *everyone* is entitled to their opinion, which means *anyone* can say what they like without some *assboy* getting all worked up and taking it personally. how 'bout we all just sit back and take a sip (or a hit or a breath, whatever) and be friends? 'cause if anyone is going to be called assboy around here it is going to be ME.
        • Ahhh. Salt Lake!
I remember way back in high school when I was harrassed and punished by 'Rockers' (poison, white snake, cinderella, striper) for being a 'Fag' (Dead Kennedy's, The Ramones, and all those British 4ad bands) I always thought it was crazy to have my sexuality questioned by guys with poofy hair and tight black spandex/faux leather...I won't even start about them rednecks, they were the worst, but still not as confusing as those lipstick wearing "heavy" metal bands.
          But we make those ASSumptions.
Last year I experienced somthing new and strange...
My girlfriend played at a vegas casino...The Palms, really nice place as far as casino's go...Mtv does a lot of taping there and the stage was really cool...anyway that night was a locals night that she had been invited to play...they broadcast the show on the internet and supposedly have 15-30 thousand subscribers world wide.
Melissa Played her alt-country set and there was a guy who did funny socialist type songs (kind of a vegasy Dan Bern) then there was a band that sounded like a mix between the barenaked ladies and led zeppelin ( had to be there) and then Dick Contino's son (movie hits like Daddy-0) played his accordian rock with a great band....
          wierd mix.
even wierder was the crowd. If you took 10 members of each representative genre-sluts from salt lake and then sprinkled one or two at each table...you might have a clue as to the crowd...and these were all local people, not tourists. Punk Rock looking guys...emo lookin guys...supersexy Goth peeps...nordstroms people, old navy types, regular dudes, cowboy fellas, hip-hop types....all of em...they all new each other and they all came out to support local music...they just wanted to come out and see some people from their neighborhood play music...I felt like an idiot because I thought it was strange...Salt Lake needs to grow up.

In high school, I hung out with the older, dirty punks. My classmates thought I was a freak then. Now they think I was way ahead of my time and was sooooo cool. Blech. I think it is really sad that some grownups still think that they are the only ones with any taste and that their music is the best. Wouldn't the local music scene be better if we could support more than what we think is cool at the moment? Isn't there room for lots of musical tastes? I think I realized about 10 years ago that I don't fit into any one "scene" anymore. I like punk, bluegrass, some jazz, some country, folk, alternative, etc... I can even appreciate a rap artist or bubblegum music once in a while.

...Er, sorry I took so long to apologize- I 've been away, but I do apologize. As an explaination, I would just have to say that I have had to defend my lifestyle and artistic choices so much, for so long , that at times I revert to my caveman instincts and attack rather than tolerate...I try to do it less as time goes by, but I still occassionally screw it up...Again, I submit my sincerest apologies...
  • hey sombody used one of my photos in the catalyst this month!
wendy O'weiler and DAve prill, used to be local then moved to Torrey Ut. I believe the article covers Stacey Board, who elected NoT to use my superior photo of her and Gina French who has not payed me the requisite bottle of Bushmills for the photo shoot of her dreams...what a lovely day in the desert that was...always excited and eager to share when my photo's make it into print...pick up a copy and enjoy along with the others.
  • I cannot bear to miss my dear friend Cameron McGill dammit. He will be playing at Liquid Joe's on October 13th. Wish he would get his wonderful lil ass to Atlanta soon. He's awesome!

bands not to miss in Salt Lake???

Ether Orchestra is nice for introspective nights, but they dont play out too much. ETHER is in limbo as far as i know.

Escort Girls has an incredible CD ("Candy to Live", and Cory Bury has a bunch of CDs with his bands Hoth(e), Syzygy, Luaith, etc.. but i've never seen any of the above advertise a live show.

Purr- Bats (a resurrected PuriDo complete with Dave Payne/ Paul Butterfield of Red Bennies, Amber Jarvis of Mouthbreather, Scott of Coyote Hoods, and the incomparable lovemaker Kyrbir is P))) craft their own special blend of super dance hits and sad pretty haunts. Always fun****

Touchdown Eagle, a band of which 3/4 is from Utah, but presently lives in Seattle, has a unique sound and vision. alternating female/ male androgynous vocals (female bass and drummer as well))), the y craft lovely but not melodramatic songs of heartbreak and loss. I wouldnt miss these guys~ they play in Salt Lake more than a few times in a year. You can listen @ www.touchdowneagle.com ~~~

In Gowan Ring (from utah as well) havent played here in years. Too bad, because they are far better live than on CD. you can download an entire album on www.ingowanring.com . they definitely do not sound like anyone else= closest comparisons? Current 93, incredible string band, and a mystickal- darker Simon and Garfunkel.

"The kingdom" create a nice ambient mood. i seem to always miss them.

REDD TAPE have a good thing going, and will sartain seems to got that good thing in his solo stuff as well. who says upbeat music has to be superficial>?

"Furthermore" seconds that. a boy girl hip-hop experimental-pop keeps the emotions up but the cheese down. too bad they left Utah too. Good thing group member Fisher's old project the NUMBS kept going- *in Salt Lake*. they've got the rhymes, mind expanding beats// tracks, style, presence, and energy to keep every show a winner :)

i keep wanting to see the all girl retro punk wave metal garage band STILETTO. hasnt happened, but it will~

sometimes i find myself in the mood for red bennies or wolfs shows, but i've gotten a little bored of most rawk. it has to be wayyy out of the ordinary to raise my brow :)
